Ani Difranco
Angela Maria Ani DiFranco (born Angela Maria Ani DiFranco) is an American and Canadian musician and singer. More than 20 albums have been released by her. DiFranco's music has been classified as folk and alternative rock although it also has influence from hip hop and jazz. Ani Difranco has been widely acknowledged as a pioneer of music that is feminist. In the year 1990 she was one of the first to establish her own independent record label. DiFranco was born on September 23, 1970 in Buffalo, New York. She is the daughter of Elizabeth (Ross), who was introduced to Dante Americo DiFranco while studying at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. Her father was of Italian descent and her mother came originally from Montreal. Ani diFranco wrote and performed the track 32 Flavors. The song is featured on her sixth studio album Not a Pretty Girl released in 1995. A version of the song is featured on the film Canadian romantic movie Better Than Chocolate. DiFranco apologized for hosting a workshop in Louisiana on an old plantation for slaves. It was postponed however, certain (including the media) did not consider it a gesture of regret. DiFranco issued a further apology a few days later. While she's been referred to as the Little Folksinger her music spans many kinds of genres and collaborates across the spectrum from Pete Seeger to Chuck D to Prince. New Orleans is her home.
